"VALLEY OF INSECTS"
TARTU LASTEKUNSTIKOOL JA HÄMEENLINNA AIMOKOULU
In the Perennial Valley of the University of Tartu Botanical Garden, in the autumn darkness a mysterious microworld comes to life. The joint installation, created by the young artists of Tartu and Hämeenlinna art schools, explores biodiversity and metamorphoses, revealing the secret lives of both utopian and realistic insects to the viewer. It is an installation environment where new energy is born from the dark.
The key elements of the artwork are interactivity and the viewer as a co-creator. The installation is initially almost completely shrouded in darkness – it is the audience who brings light to the valley. With a curious gaze and flashlights, visitors bring the artwork to life while wandering along the dark paths. Every beam of UV light reveals new details, larger-than-life creatures, and quiet, tiny bugs, all going about their mysterious business in the valley.
"Valley of Insects" is a collaborative project that explores the awakening of creativity through joint action. Nearly 700 young artists and 30 teachers have contributed to the birth of this new ecosystem in the Perennials Valley. It is the most extensive community artwork of the TAVA26 festival. The installation is part of the Estonian Youth Capital Tartu 2026 programme.
See you in the dark!
