TAVA26 GENERAL CONCEPT
ANTIMATTER
Curator: Elo Liiv
At the beginning of time, immediately after the Big Bang, matter and antimatter were born in equal amounts. Theoretically, the cosmos should be a balanced mixture of the two, yet observations indicate that our universe consists almost exclusively of matter. This fundamental asymmetry is one of the greatest mysteries of modern physics.
Metaphorically, antimatter can be viewed as a force that challenges the established description of the world. It offers a possibility for the collapse of binary thinking: the black-and-white worldview loses its sharp edges, making room for a nuanced and diverse reality. While in physics the meeting of matter and antimatter leads to annihilation and the release of energy, in a cultural sense, these collisions signify development. As Rein Raud has noted, original ideas are often born as a dialectical reaction—an opposition to the existing, which creates the soil for new creativity.
However, there is a danger in this process. Just as in the mathematical Feynman-Stueckelberg model, where an antiparticle is viewed as matter moving backward in time, a dynamic cultural phenomenon can also lose its future trajectory. Upon encountering interaction, or conflict, with a dogmatized environment, this creative energy is cast back in time. Future-oriented progress begins to move toward the past, becoming its own antiparticle—a protective stagnation or nostalgia.
Society can become trapped in such a time loop, bouncing blindly between two extremes. Escaping it is a demanding task, both physically and intellectually. Liberation requires finding a "true opposite," which, upon meeting, does not result in a new conflict, but in catharsis. Through critical thinking and conscious perception, the system ceases its back-and-forth bouncing, annihilates the old pattern, and releases pure, timeless light from the closed circle.
The Tartu Light Biennale TAVA26 opens this complex relationship between matter and antimatter, exploring the essence of human relationships, space, and culture through light. Through installations that simultaneously create and erase the surrounding environment, TAVA26 leads the audience out of the "time loop," uniting conflicting feelings and thoughts into a single, cleansing catharsis.
