"空 KŪ, THE VOID"
RAN ANCOR (IT/GER)
空 KU, the Void
An audiovisual project for photonic modulators
Featuring Floating Spectrum’s computer vision and generative sound
“空 “空 KŪ, the VOID” This is an immersive audiovisual experience, using hacked scientific technology as an artistic medium. The analog visuals derive from an oscilloscope, which generates light from electromagnetic fields deflecting electron beams. These warm and organic images are transformed via computer vision into real-time motion data, which drive the generative sound system. The audience is invited to immerse themselves in the intricate layers of the soundscape and organic visual textures that explore symmetry and randomness, deliberation and serendipity.
Diffuse reflection from a surface is the primary mechanism by which objects are revealed to our eyes: light allows us to see the world around us; reality is revealed to our eyes thanks to this interaction. 空 Kū is part of ongoing research focusing on what happens in the previous phase of this interaction. A journey into pure light, before it gets to enlighten other, real objects. What we see projected is the moment in which these points of light light up. There is no numerical processing between the light source and the projection: it is a direct recording. The processing and manipulation take place before, in the generation of the source signal and as a result of the performance action: it is thus possible to use an electron beam deflected by an electromagnetic field to generate these drawings. The output is an analog image, with no quantization processes involved.
空 Kū (most often translated as “Void”, but also meaning “Sky” or “Heaven”) represents those things beyond our everyday experience, particularly those things composed of pure energy. It is of particular importance as the highest of the five elements. Kū represents spirit, thought, and creative energy, as well as our ability to think and to communicate. Kū is not the void in the sense of nothingness, but is a totality, a universal freedom beyond the normal conditions of existence.
AUTHOR

Francesco Mancori, also known as Ran Ancor, is a Berlin-based Italian media artist, mainly dedicated to light research and video experimentation. He studied philosophy of science (University of Rome) with a minor in computer science, then started to work in between art and science. He has acquired great experience in the field of video and multimedia and has worked for artists such as Bill Viola and Brian Eno. He has dedicated himself to electronic audiovisual live sets, vjing, light installations, wearable performances, algorithmic drawings, and interactive computing.
His most significant elements in his works are immateriality, movement and metamorphosis, visual fluxus, and fusion with sound and space. In 2001 he founded eXtraLight Advanced Visuals, focusing on light as a substance through its expression in the form of light performances, visuals, and installations. In his work, he uses custom-designed software and hardware, and is passionate about exploring and traveling in the incredible world of electromagnetic fields, from which he brings back images of geometries that are impossible to observe elsewhere. https://francescomanc
